GBM 31 – Beer Bubbles, Saturations, Competition and Niching Down with Brewer’s Association’s Chief Economist, Bart Watson

If you have heard someone talk about bubbles, saturation points, market corrections or competition amongst suppliers, then chances are they are talking about breweries.  After a recent explosion in the 2010s, there are far more than 7,000 breweries currently in the US. American beer sales are well over 1 Billion dollars and that does not even account for businesses indirectly related to beer.  Meanwhile, consumers have pulled away from beer by an abundance of options from wine, spirits, hard seltzers, kombuchas and more.  It seems the incoming tide of beer may have raised all the ships, but now they must focus on staying afloat.

The Brewer’s Association crunches numbers and stats for the benefit of independent breweries in the US.  Today’s guest helps us understand these stats and gives a little insight as to how these breweries can differentiate themselves despite the crowd.

We find ourselves in a consumers market where breweries vie for our attention.  If you ask me, this is a great time to be a beer drinker.  But, if there are breweries out there that you love, make sure to vote with your dollars because, in any competitive society, only the strongest will survive.
