A restaurant manager once told me, “There are two reasons people go out to eat, to have an experience they can’t recreate at home, or to avoid doing dishes.” These days, there is enough competition between breweries and restaurants that avoiding dishes isn’t enough to capture the attention of most consumers.

But, the promise of a greater experience takes work and a bit of education.  Since restaurants usually operate on thin margins and a lot of hard work, education is a luxury that may sit on the To Do list forever.  In this episode my guest and I discuss beer education as a business, the sophisticated beer scene in Asheville NC, and how restaurants and bars can easily differentiate themselves and improve sales through better beer education.

Beer education takes work, but it doesn’t have to be intimidating.  There are Cicerone’s, resources online, and great books that will lead you as far as you want to go.  It is just beer after all, and the process will bring its own reward.
